Flock Bearwolves

Flock Bearwolves

VIDEO INSTALLATION and PUBLIC ENGAGING PERFORMANCE filmed in the Polar Bear Caves panoramic constructed landscape at the Zoological Garden in Copenhagen.  BEARWOLVES is one of three video installations in the Flock Collection. Each screening start with a public engaging performance, where the guests become part of the flocks’ rituals. The Flock Collection was produced for the curated part of The FOCUS video festival in 2015 at NIKOLAJ KUNSTHAL Copenhagen.

The Bear wolves pack is part bear and part wolves. The hybrid animal combines the secluded nature of brown and polar bears who live most of their time alone and the nature of wolves who live in large packs governed by an Alpha-female and Alpha-male. The Alpha couple is the only ones to produce cubs with the rest of the pack as hunters for the flock. The Alpha – female lives for months in a cave with her cubs both the live ones and those who did not survive withering as leafs.

In the primary school years group dynamics are insistingly present: to belong and not belong, the constant revision of positions in groups, peer pressure, the encountering of strangers and change of environment. The Bear wolf performers are age 11 -13 they contribute with their own group dynamic and thoughts, movements and stories.

An Interdisciplinary environment with a biologist, a performer/writer, a puppeteer and video artist Seidler was the set-up for the performers to create their own flock in the Zoo animal’s surroundings next to the smells and residue of the real animals, while the true inhabitants resided elsewhere. The artistic process evolved over two months, based on the method: gathering of Zoological knowledge – observation of herd behavior – learning through performance, text improvisations and video recordings.
