A horseflock as a metaphor 5 projections PANORAMIC VIDEO INSTALLATION18 min. Produced in 2013 – 2014 for the Solo exhibition HUMAN ANIMAL at NIKOLAJ KUNSTHAL and VIBORG KUNSTHAL. A Horse flock becomes a metaphor for real life work situations when a group of five business leaders learns management strategy through interactions with a horse flock. The men test their own abilities as a leader on the horses. As they each get a set of similar tasks, choosing freely between the whip or a soothing voice to lead the horses. The business leaders also cooperate to setup a challenge and overcome it.
The work method for the filming is inspired by Horse assisted Equine coach Anne Kuhnell who gave insight into the horse as a coach for business leaders, companies and institutions to gain judgement over their personal leader style and resources. In such a workshop the horse becomes a metaphor for a real life work situation mirroring the groups emotional mechanisms.
In the film the horses responds instinctively and only allows the men to lead, if they have a convincing body language and can communicate non-verbally. The horseis also seen as a co-worker mirroring the group’s emotional mechanisms as horses are used to depend on their strong sense of feeling for being able to read a situation, and respond accordingly in order to survive. The horse being a flight animal, will responds immediately to actions with basic instincts deciding between fear and trust.
The footage is recorded in cinemascope format, which is extra wide and often used in westerns. The size and the round scape of the projections facilitates that one comes quite close to the situations, where instincts and basic feelings as fear and trust take turns and are displayed.
